What makes a great cycling kit?

(And why you don’t need to spend a fortune to get it)
Let’s be honest — there’s a lot of cycling kit out there that looks great on Instagram but feels like sandpaper on a long ride. And then there’s the high-end stuff that costs more than your first car.
At Spoke and Stone, we believe you shouldn’t have to choose between comfort, performance, and your mortgage. So what actually makes great cycling kit? Let’s break it down — no fluff, no marketing waffle.
1. It starts with the fabric (and ours is Italian, naturally)
If you're going to spend hours in the saddle, your skin deserves something special.
We use the same high-performance Italian-made fabrics found in the very top-tier kits.
These fabrics are breathable, compressive where needed, quick-drying, and most importantly, feel bloody amazing to wear.
No scratchy seams. No soggy sagging. Just gear that moves with you.
2. Pads that go the distance (without feeling like a nappy)
We’ve all had a ride where the only thing worse than the headwind was the chamois.
So we sorted that. Our bib shorts use top-spec Italian pads (Elastic Interface — the best in the biz), engineered for endurance and comfort. Whether you're grinding up gravel or cruising on tarmac, they keep everything feeling fresh. No compromise here.
3. Cut to fit real riders, not just pros
We love a good race-fit jersey… but not everyone’s built like a 60kg Belgian climber.
Our gear comes in cuts that actually fit Kiwi riders — from the weekend warriors to the hardcore racers. We’ve designed our kits to be aero where it matters, but forgiving where it counts. They’re flattering, functional, and don’t require a crowbar to get into.
4. Colours that last (and actually look good)
Our dyeing and sublimation process uses cutting-edge colour technology, meaning your jersey stays sharp and vibrant — wash after wash. No weird fading, no colour runs, and definitely no “wasn’t that black last week?” moments.
5. We test it. Ride it. Tweak it. Then sell it.
Before anything hits the website, it’s been thrashed by real riders on real New Zealand roads (and trails).
We test our kits in all conditions — freezing descents, sweaty climbs, soggy gravel, the odd coffee stop… If it doesn’t hold up, we go back to the drawing board. No exceptions.
6. Price without the pain
You’ll find kits out there for $400+ that don’t offer anything more than what we do (except a big logo and fancy marketing).
Because we sell direct and cut out the middlemen, you’re getting premium kit without the premium markup. You get top-shelf materials, performance-tested design, and a fit that works — for a price that makes sense.
So What Makes Great Cycling Kit?
👉 It’s the perfect balance of fabric, fit, comfort, durability, and style.👉 It’s gear that feels as good on hour five as it does on kilometre one.👉 And it’s gear that’s made by people who actually ride bikes (that’s us).
Spoke and Stone was born out of frustration — overpriced, overhyped kit that didn’t deliver. We decided to build something better, for real riders, right here in New Zealand.
If you haven’t tried our kit yet, maybe it’s time you did.
